12TH JULY - DAY 6 - ÞÓRSMÖRK-FIMMVÖRÐUHÁLS

WHAT WE DID:

After crossing the nearby river thanks to a bridge, it was uphill as we had to reach a hut much higher up, in a place where two glaciers almost meet. There was a lot of fog unfortunately.

COMMENT:

In the morning it wasn't clear enough so we didn't go back to the viewpoint where we had gone on the previous evening.

Unfortunately there were a lot of clouds so we didn't get to see much of the glaciers surrounding us as we were going uphill. We managed to see a few birds walking on the ground. Once we reached a certain altitude, it became really foggy (it very often is). The landscape had already changed from green and rock to ice and rock. We saw two lakes on the ice. When we reached the hut the visibility was quite good towards south and we managed to see Skogar and the Ocean, which we were going to reach on the following day. However, once inside the hut, outside all the windows was nothing but fog.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS:

Distance between huts: 12-13 Km

Elevation increase: 1000 m

Highest point on route: 1100 m

Occasionally there were some quite steep bits, at one point there is a chain, about 50 m long, for you to hold on as this bit would be quite dangerous otherwise.

It was very foggy and often you couldn't see more than one pole.

THE HUT:

Sleeping bag accomodation, cooking facilities/equipment, gas, water from a pump (it wasn't working so there was melted snow), latrine. Also, it had a solar panel.
